NCT00051051
CI-1033 is an experimental drug that acts as an inhibitor of erbB (EGFR) receptors, which may be involved in tumor growth. The primary objective of this study is to assess the antitumor activity of CI-1033 in patients with metastatic breast cancer. Patients with histologically confirmed metastatic (Stage IV) breast cancer and who have received no more than 2 prior cytotoxic chemotherapy regimens are eligible for this study. CI-1033 is administered orally. Patients are required to have blood tests periodically while receiving treatment and will be closely monitored throughout the study for possible side effects and response to treatment. Patients may not have received any prior treatment with other agents that target erbB receptors, including Herceptin (trastuzumab) or Iressa (gefitinib).
NCT00327691
The primary objective of this study is to determine the degree of additional reduction in cardiovascular risk that was accrued to patients by lowering their LDL-C beyond the currently accepted minimum target level for patients with pre-existing CHD. Secondary objectives include the safety profile of this treatment strategy, its cost-effectiveness, effect on other atherosclerotic-related events and procedures, and total mortality.
NCT00305981
Family members have poor overall understanding of ICU patients' prognosis, resuscitation status and care, defined a priori as less than 75% correct responses to the yes/no ICU care questions. Family members of all adult patients admitted to an intensive care of San Francisco General Hospital will be screened for enrollment and recruited sequentially over a period of nine months (August 1, 2005-March 31, 2006). We will determine the frequency of family members' correct responses to the survey questions about ICU care. Family member responses will be compared to the chart and real-time patient observation reality (gold standard). Hypothesis # 2 Poor English language comprehension and low education level (defined as not having completed high school) are risk factors for poor ICU care understanding and knowledge. During their surveys family members will be asked questions regarding their English language comprehension and education level. Association of these possible risk factors with low level of ICU care knowledge will be tested primarily using analysis of variance. Should our hypothesis #2 prove to be correct, our future goal will be to develop recommendations for interventions to increase understanding specific for these high risk groups. One of these interventions is described in Hypothesis #3 below. Hypothesis # 3 Provision of the results of family members' knowledge assessment to health care providers will result in improved ICU care knowledge on subsequent testing. Subjects will be randomized to two groups-one group's health care providers will be shown the results of family members' initial ICU knowledge assessment; the other group's providers will not be given these results. One to two days after providing this summary to providers, all randomized subjects will undergo a second interview assessing their ICU care knowledge. Changes in the frequency of correct responses between the two groups will be compared using mean differences in proportions with 95% confidence intervals.
NCT00310921
The purpose of this study is to determine whether misoprostol administered prior to elective first trimester pregnancy has an effect on pain and ease of procedure and complications.
NCT00454441
Menopausal women often complain of difficulty sleeping and the transition from pre- to postmenopausal status is associated with an incresase in self-reported sleep disturbance. Hot flashes have been associated with self-reported measures of sleep disturbance and changes in sleep pattern as measured by plysomnography, including an increase in stage 4 and a latency or shortened time in rapid-eye movement sleep. Although there are some data on the effect of hormone replacement therapy on self-reported sleep measures in symptomatic postmenopausal women, there are no data on the effect of herbal extracts on subjective or objective measures of sleep quality in this population group. Actigraphy, the use of a device to record movement generally placed on the wrist, has been used over 20 years to provide objective data concerning sleep/wake patterns. The advantage of actigraphy over traditional polysomnography is that actigraphy can conveniently record continuously for 24-hours a day for longer periods of time.
NCT00124358
The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility, cost and effectiveness of interventions designed to integrate buprenorphine treatment for opioid dependence into HIV primary care in ten HIV care centers in the U.S.
NCT00140309
This study is a placebo-controlled factorial study, randomized to study drug (moxifloxacin vs. ethambutol) and treatment frequency (daily vs. thrice weekly after an initial two weeks of daily therapy) during the first two months of standard treatment (with isoniazid, rifampin, and pyrazinamide) for sputum smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis.
NCT00161668
This study is designed to assess the safety of Mylotarg therapy in routine practice.
NCT00283361
The main purpose of this study is to see if the experimental drug ZP120, when given with the approved drug furosemide to patients with acute or sub-acute heart failure, can reduce the amount of fluid in the patients' lungs and make breathing easier.
NCT00424411
To determine, in subjects with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: 1. Whether glycemic control can be achieved at least as effectively with an insulin regimen involving pre-meal EXUBERA™ (inhaled insulin) plus a single bedtime Ultralente injection as with a conventional subcutaneous insulin regimen involving 2 mixed Regular/NPH insulin injections per day. 2. The toleration and safety of EXUBERA™ (inhaled insulin) therapy and its effects after 6 months, if any, on measures of pulmonary function.
NCT00228592
The purpose of this study is to compare the use of HepeX-B versus HBIg, two anti-viral drugs, in patients who have received liver transplants due to liver failure caused by Hepatitis B infection. Patients will be evaluated over a 6 month to 1.5 year period to evaluate whether or not the drugs prevent the Hepatitis B virus from infecting the new liver.
NCT00462189
RATIONALE: The CAT-8015 immunotoxin can bind tumor cells and kill them without harming normal cells. This may be an effective treatment for hairy cell leukemia(HCL) that has not responded to chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy. PURPOSE: Phase I dose escalation study to determine the maximum tolerated dose of CAT-8015 immunotoxin in treating patients who have hairy cell leukemia (HCL) that has not responded to treatment.
NCT00122304
The primary objective is to evaluate the safety of eculizumab in patients with transfusion-dependent hemolytic PNH
NCT00103584
This is a Phase I/II study evaluating the safety and immunogenicity of LC16m8, a modified vaccinia vaccine. After consent and thorough screening (including safety labs, EKG, and medical history), healthy, previously unvaccinated volunteers between the ages of 18-34 will receive a single vaccination of either LC16m8 or the current US-licensed smallpox vaccine, Dryvax. Volunteers will be blindly randomized to a treatment group in a 4:1 ratio (4 LC16m8 to 1 Dryvax recipient). Follow-up clinical evaluations, laboratory testing, EKGs and cardiac assessments will be done at regularly scheduled follow-up visits for 1 year after vaccination.
NCT00421031
The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of 4 doses of desvenlafaxine-233 sustained release (DVS-233 SR) as compared to placebo for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause, as well as its influence on sleep parameters and other health outcomes indicators.
NCT00255528
This was a 4-week, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-group study to determine the antihypertensive dose range, efficacy, safety and tolerability of TOPROL-XL ® (metoprolol succinate) extended-release tablets (metoprolol CR/XL) in hypertensive pediatric subjects. The study population included school age children (age 6 to \< Tanner Stage 3) and adolescents (\> Tanner Stage 3 to age 16) of both genders. No more than 50% of the randomized subjects could be adolescents (\> Tanner Stage 3 to 16 years old). Since response to some therapies in adult hypertension appears to be different in black and non-black populations, recruitment was aimed at a mixture of black and non-black children. The design included a 1-week screening period (for treatment naive subjects), a 1-week single-blind placebo run-in period, and a 4-week double-blind treatment period. Eligible subjects were randomized to the double-blind period with a once daily oral dose of metoprolol CR/XL to one of three target doses: 0.2, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg, or placebo. Dosing was weight adjusted. The dose range for this study was 12.5 to 200 mg daily. Subjects were closely monitored and evaluated at the end of Weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4 during the double-blind treatment period.
NCT00139763
This is a questionnaire based study (no study drug is involved) that asks if more patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes on diabetes pills will choose insulin as the next treatment choice if inhaled insulin were available in addition to all currently available treatments, compared with if inhaled insulin was not available as part of currently available treatments. This study will also ask if patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes currently managed on diabetes pills + once daily insulin will choose as the next treatment choice to take insulin multiple times a day if inhaled insulin were available in addition to all currently available treatments, compared with if inhaled insulin was not available as part of currently available treatments.
