NCT00547118
1\) To examine the efficacy of rimonabant in decreasing weight and metabolic parameters/cardiovascular disease risk in people with schizophrenia receiving second generation antipsychotics 2) To examine the safety and tolerability of rimonabant as an adjunctive agent for decreasing weight and metabolic risk in people with schizophrenia 3) To examine the efficacy of rimonabant for neurocognitive impairments in people with schizophrenia treated with second-generation antipsychotics (secondary outcome) 4) To examine the efficacy of rimonabant for patient perceived health outcomes and quality of life (secondary outcome) 5) To test the effect of rimonabant on cigarette smoking, nicotine dependence and nicotine craving in people with schizophrenia 6) To examine the effects of rimonabant on food satiety in people with schizophrenia There is an increasing awareness of the problem of metabolic issues in people with schizophrenia and renewed focus on physical health care for this population. There is under-treatment, in general, of medical conditions in people with schizophrenia, and increased mortality from natural causes. People with schizophrenia are at risk for developing obesity due to many factors including inactive lifestyle, poor dietary choices, and side effects of the commonly used atypical antipsychotics. Metabolic syndrome has been discussed in the cardiology and endocrinology for over two decades, but its prevalence in the mentally ill is only now being fully realized. Diabetes mellitus may be twice as prevalent among patients with schizophrenia as in the general population and metabolic syndrome is probably even more prevalent than diabetes among people with schizophrenia. There is now an opportunity to address this serious problem. A new drug, rimonabant, has recently been approved in several European and Latin American countries. This drug represents the first of a new class of psychoactive drugs witch may improve metabolic problems through decreasing appetite drive. This may also help decrease the drive for cigarette use, which is also a great problem for people with schizophrenia. Is this a safe and effective treatment in this population? This study proposes to test this question in a rapid study, which will develop the basis for future work in this important area.
NCT02139761
Cocaine continues to be one of the most widely used substances of abuse around the world. In the US, an estimated 1.4 million individuals (0.5%) \> 12 years were current (past month) cocaine users in 2011. Currently, no FDA-approved pharmacologic treatments are available for cocaine addiction; thus, this remains a serious public health problem without an effective pharmacological treatment. A promising lead towards an effective treatment comes from a recent finding that pretreatment with oral l-tetrahydropalmitine (l-THP) in rats attenuated the cocaine seeking associated with a cocaine challenge, while having no motor effects. This finding stimulated our group to test the pharmacokinetics and safety of l-THP in a phase I study of people with cocaine use. Preliminary findings show l-THP is safe and well tolerated in cocaine users, with no adverse interactions with cocaine. This study will test the efficacy and safety of l-THP for abstinence in those with cocaine addiction in a phase II pilot study (N=24). Secondarily, we will examine the effects of these medications on craving.
NCT03354403
Background: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is a genetic condition. It usually presents in boys in childhood with vision loss. Genetic conditions affect the people who have it and also their family members. Researchers want to learn if mothers and fathers react differently when a son gets XLRS. They also want to learn how personality impacts the way people react. This will help researchers find better ways to support families living with XLRS. Objective: To learn more about the experiences of mothers of sons with XLRS compared to fathers of sons with XLRS. Also to study personality differences between mothers and fathers. Eligibility: Parents of a biological son of any age with XLRS who is enrolled in protocol 03-EI-0033 Design: Participants will be asked questions in person or by phone. This will last 30 90 minutes. They will be asked about their experience with XLRS and how it has impacted their family. The interview will be recorded. Participants will complete a survey about personality traits. It will be anonymous. It can be completed by mail, email, or fax. It will take about 15 minutes. Participants data may be shared with others, including those not at NIH, if they agree. Their data may be stored. Sponsoring Institution: National Eye Institute
NCT00003397
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. Monoclonal antibodies can locate cancer cells and either kill them or deliver cancer-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of peripheral stem cell transplantation plus combination chemotherapy and rituximab in treating patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
NCT00046852
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with autologous peripheral stem cell transplantation and immunotherapy may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. Biological therapies use different ways to stimulate the immune system and stop cancer cells from growing. PURPOSE: Randomized phase I/II trial to study the effectiveness of combining chemotherapy with peripheral stem cell transplantation followed by immunotherapy in treating patients who have multiple myeloma.
NCT04007263

NCT00915083
The purpose of the study is to determine whether amrubicin is safe and effective in the treatment of patients with advanced solid tumors. The study will assess the pharmacokinetics of the amrubicin and if it has an effect on the heart.
NCT01100762
The use of low level electrical stimulation when applied over the head, also called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), is being tested by several groups of researchers to see if tDCS can improve movements of persons with damage to the brain. The safety and potential benefits of tDCS to children or adults patients who are paralyzed because of brain damage are reported in the medical literature. In addition, some patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience improvement in memory and report better use of the hand after tDCS. The treatment requires putting electrodes (pads) over the head and sending very small amount of electrical current that the patient may feel as "little tingling". Application of tDCS takes 20 min. In this study we wish to test if tDCS application can improve stepping and walking ability of subjects with PD and if the improvement is the same as when walking on treadmill. We plan to test the subject's ability to step when pulled by a laboratory testing system and also test his/her walking ability. There will be 3 sessions 7 days apart. In the first session the subject will be tested then treated for 20 min with tDCS and then tested again. In the second session the subject will be tested then walk on a treadmill for 20 min then tested again. In the third session the subject will be tested then walk on the treadmill for 20 min while receiving also tDCS and tested one last time at the end of the session. Each session will take between 2 and 3 hours.
NCT00771953
