The purpose of this study is to determine the level of sulfur amino acids in the diet that is needed to maintaining glutathione antioxidant status. This information could prove very useful in medicine because it could allow identification of an optimal diet for control of antioxidant levels. This diet could be used in conjunction with other therapies in order to prevent or delay oxidative stress and any diseases that may result from this. Total study participation will include a screening visit and a 14-day study period where dietary intake of sulfur amino acids will be controlled. We aim to enroll 12 normal subjects at Emory University Hospital.The primary hypothesis is that steady-state GSH/GSSG and CYS/CYSS redox in human plasma will become oxidized due to SAA intake at 0% of the RDA and reduced due to SAA intake at 3X the RDA.

Availability of sulfur amino acids (SAA) is critical for glutathione/glutathione disulfide (GSH/GSSG) and cysteine/cystine (CYS/CYSS) redox in vivo and for many other physiologic functions including protein synthesis, nitrogen balance, digestion, osmotic regulation, detoxification, hormonal regulation, biologic methylations, and cell growth regulation. GSH conjugation and sulfate conjugation represent quantitatively important pathways for chemical detoxification, which imposes substantial burden upon SAA supply. The primary hypothesis is that SAA deficient diet and acetaminophen (APAP) administration will perturb Cys metabolism and GSH redox homeostasis in human plasma and urinary output of SAA metabolites. Because both of these variations affect SAA homeostasis, it is believed that the combination of these treatments will produce an interactive effect in which 2-day SAA deficiency will alter APAP metabolism, APAP will affect SAA homeostasis, and the treatments together will alter the global metabolic profile, as measured by 1H-NMR spectroscopy.

Although currently marketed antipsychotic drugs are useful in the treatment of schizophrenia, efficacy and safety profiles need to be improved. Forty to eighty percent of patients either fail to respond or only partially respond to conventional antipsychotic agents. Secondary symptoms may be unimproved even in patients who respond to treatment. A variety of adverse events occur in patients receiving currently available agents. The severity of these events contributes to the poor compliance that is observed in this patient population. Olanzapine is a novel antipsychotic agent with a reduced incidence of extrapyramidal symptoms. Other side effects are minimal.

Eligible patients will be randomized in a ratio of 2:1 to receive either chemotherapy (a taxane and a platinum compound) plus CPG 7909 Injection or chemotherapy alone. Protocol therapy will be administered until disease progression or intolerable toxicity. CpG 7909 Injection will be administered subcutaneously, on Weeks 2 and 3 of each three-week cycle (days 8 and 15) and chemotherapy will be administered on Week 1 (Day 1). Patients will undergo complete disease evaluation at the end of every other treatment cycle until disease progression.

The objective of MER-101-03 is to examine the effects of two different dosing regimens of MER-101 20mg tablets versus Zometa 4mg IV infusion once-monthly therapy. The effects will be monitored on a weekly basis by measuring various markers of bone metabolism. Patients to be enrolled will be those who have not received any previous bisphosphonate therapy. The study will be carried out on prostate cancer patients who are no longer on hormone therapy. Treatment in the study will be for a 2-month period.

The purpose of this study is to investigate E7107 in patients with solid tumors. This is an open label, dose-escalation study of E7107. The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of the single agent will be established by determining the occurrence of dose limiting toxicities during the first three weeks of therapy (Cycle 1). Patients in this study will be treated at multiple dose levels, starting at 0.6 mg/m\^2. Patients will receive E7107 as a 30-minute intravenous infusion on Days 1 and 8 every 21 Days.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common and catastrophic complication of critical illness related to burns, motor vehicle accidents, or overwhelming infection. ARDS kills 40-70% of affected patients. Patients with ARDS require life support in the form of a ventilator to breathe for them while their lungs heal. Ironically, ventilators can cause further damage to the lungs. We are conducting a study comparing 2 methods to protect the lungs from further damage. One method uses standard mechanical ventilators and the other uses a new type of ventilator, called a high frequency oscillator. We propose to test whether this high frequency oscillation will reduce the relative risk of dying from ARDS. 72 patients from 12 intensive care units in Canada and Saudi Arabia will participate in this preliminary study to test the feasibility of our study methods. If feasible, we plan to move on and conduct a large multinational study to definitively answer this question.

The purpose of the study is to assess whether treatment with SR58611A can prevent relapse of depressive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder. Relapse will be assessed using the MADRS scale.Patients who demonstrate improvement in depressive symptoms at the end of the initial 12-week open-label treatment period with SR58611A are randomized to continue SR58611A or switch to placebo under double blind conditions for up to 52 weeks of additional treatment. The secondary objective is to evaluate the safety of SR58611A in patients with MDD.
