NCT00321945
It is well known that atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial flutter occur frequently after most types of cardiac surgeries.(1-4) Postoperative AF is associated with significant morbidity, longer hospital stay, and higher related costs. Currently, it is common procedure to premedicate patients with antiarrhythmic drugs for elective cardiac surgeries. Treatments such as beta blockers, Amiodarone, and electrical pacing are used to help prevent the morbidity associated with pot-operative AF.(5) Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) activation may contribute to AF. Several clinical trials have suggested that inhibitors of this system may reduce the incidence of AF.(6-12) Patients with AF are known to have increased levels of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and some types of angiotensin receptors.(13-15) Data from animal studies performed by our group suggest that cardiac ACE overexpression may lead to arrhythmic ion channel changes.(16;17) Although not studied in this group yet, it would be reasonable to conclude that the use of ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) would decrease the incidence of AF in post-operative patients, too
NCT00321282
Roughly thirty percent of people that undergo open heart surgery get an abnormal heart beat afterwards known as atrial fibrillation (AF). While not life threatening, this abnormal heart beat increases the likelihood of stroke and delays recovery. There are strategies to prevent post-operative AF, but they are costly and sometimes have undesirable side effects. Therefore, it would be best if we use these preventive treatments only in high risk patients. We intend to develop a risk prediction model based on demographic and electrocardiogram (ECG) findings that will predicted who is likely to get AF. We will develop this model using data already available on patients who have undergone cardiac surgery. The development of this model will use the latest mathematical algorithms similar to those used to study genetic evolution. This type of model is capable of looking at many parameters in an unbiased way, so that only the strongest, independent predictors remain in the final model. Once, the model is developed, we will validate the model by comparing our predictions to actual outcomes previously recorded in the database.
NCT01140217
The purpose of this study is to determine whether NEA TDS is effective in the prevention of pregnancy. The safety of this product will also be evaluated.
NCT00142194
Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heart beat that starts in the upper parts of the heart and can cause stroke or death, if untreated. In general, treatments are not very effective, with frequent relapses of the abnormal heart beats. One explanation for the high relapse rate is that the treatments might not address the underlying cause of atrial fibrillation. Recently, the investigators have found that atrial fibrillation is associated with increased oxidative stress. This is a condition where abnormal oxygen forms are produced. These forms harm the cells of the heart, causing them to beat abnormally. The investigators have found increased oxidative stress in pig and mouse models of atrial fibrillation. They would like to see if oxidative stress is present in humans with atrial fibrillation. In this study, they will compare blood markers of oxidative stress between patients with and without atrial fibrillation. It is the expectation that participants with atrial fibrillation will have more abnormal blood markers of atrial fibrillation. This study requires participants to visit their doctors, undergo a history and physical examination, and give blood only once.
NCT00243802
The purpose of the study is to look at the differences between people who have irregular heart beats coming from the upper chamber of the heart (atrial fibrillation) compared to those who do not have these irregular beats.
NCT01084928
The South Asian Community, people with origins in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, or Bhutan, are more likely to get diabetes, get diabetes at younger ages, and do worse health-wise once they have diabetes than the general population. This study will test the feasibility and community acceptability of a culturally appropriate lifestyle intervention for the prevention of diabetes in the South Asian community. The outcomes of this project could be used to plan larger interventions to prevent diabetes in South Asians, a rapidly growing segment of the US population.
NCT00863889
The objective of this study is to conduct a randomized, single-blinded placebo controlled trial comparing two modalities for the treatment of pain and mobility associated with trochanteric bursitis: (1) injection of glucocorticosteroid and local anesthetic, (2) injection of local anesthetic. We hope to determine whether steroid injections provide a statistically significant improvement in pain symptoms and hip mobility in subjects with trochanteric bursitis, as compared to an injection of local anesthetic. Our null hypothesis is that no statistically significant difference exists between the two treatment modalities.
NCT00169312
RATIONALE: Websites for nutrition education may be an effective method to help people eat more fruits and vegetables which may lower their risk of cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized trial is studying how well an internet-based nutrition education program works in preventing cancer in participants of health maintenance organizations.
NCT00897039
RATIONALE: Collecting samples of tissue from patients with cancer to study in the laboratory may help doctors predict how well patients will respond to treatment with certain chemotherapy drugs and plan the best treatment. PURPOSE: This laboratory study is looking at tumor tissue samples to predict response to chemotherapy in patients with ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer.
NCT00166062
The purpose of this study is to see if using a computer kiosk to screen men and women for intimate partner violence victimization and perpetration is safe and effective. We hypothesize that screening will not result in any adverse events.
NCT01071083
This is a randomized, rater blinded trial in patients who interrupt treatment with natalizumab with or without being treated with other immunomodulatory drugs, or continue treatment with natalizumab. The main purpose of this study is to find out the following, when participants stop taking natalizumab for 24 weeks: * when MS symptoms return, and * if other drugs for MS may help control MS symptoms during the natalizumab-interruption period. This study will also explore how quickly the effects of natalizumab return after resuming natalizumab dosing.

NCT01579279
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of ABT-652 compared to Placebo in subjects with diabetic neuropathic pain. People with diabetes can, over time develop nerve damage throughout the body with symptoms such as pain, tingling, or numbness (loss of feeling) in the hands, arms, feet and legs.
NCT01163721
This study enrolled participants with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) despite non-insulin antidiabetic therapy in addition to diet and exercise, and would have benefited from additional control of blood glucose levels. The study assessed the metabolic effects of ranolazine, including its effect in lowering glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and lowering glucose while fasting, and following a meal (postprandial). Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive ranolazine or placebo, and were stratified by HbA1c ≤ 7.5% or \> 7.5%. Enrollment was to include no more than two-thirds of participants with baseline HbA1c ≤ 7.5%. Other than glucose values, efficacy endpoint results remained blinded during the study; for safety purposes, the investigator was to be alerted of severe hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. Participants were instructed to maintain logs of their physical activity/exercise (Subject Activity Assessment) and study drug dosing (Dosing Log).
NCT00282568
A study to assess the pharmacokinetics, safety and effectiveness of tacrolimus in stable kidney transplant patients converted from a Prograf® based immunosuppression regimen to a modified release tacrolimus based immunosuppression regimen.
NCT01100619
The primary objective of this clinical study is to determine whether the inhibition of cytochrome P450 (CYP) isozyme CYP2C8 by XL184 observed in in vitro preclinical studies translates into the potential for clinically significant drug-drug interactions in humans. The study will measure the effect of once daily dosing of XL184 on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of rosiglitazone. The PK of XL184 when combined with rosiglitazone will be evaluated as well. A specific objective of this study is to determine whether the interaction between XL184 and a drug such as rosiglitazone is sufficiently large enough to necessitate a dosage adjustment when used in combination with XL184, or whether the interaction would require additional therapeutic monitoring. Rosiglitazone, commonly known as Avandia, is a prescription medicine approved by the FDA used to treat adults with Type 2 (adult-onset or non-insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus (high blood sugar). In this study, subjects will only take 2 doses of rosiglitazone. There is no intention of therapy as a result of taking rosiglitazone in this study.
