NCT01584895
Cardiac rehabilitation programs improve mortality, functional capacity, and quality of life, for a variety of patients with heart disease. It stands to reason that patients with LVADs might therefore also benefit from the same structured exercise training, education, and clinical surveillance. One potential benefit of cardiac rehabilitation in this patient population is reversal of the skeletal muscle atrophy that occurs due to extended periods of poor peripheral perfusion (i.e. before implantation) and prolonged sedentary behavior. Purpose: The purpose of this proposed study is to examine the effects of a 6-week exercise program on cardiorespiratory fitness, quality of life, and device flow rate in patients with recently implanted LVADs. Methods: 30 patients with recently implanted LVADs will be referred by the Henry Ford Hospital Advanced Heart Failure Program once the patient is deemed appropriate for exercise. Before enrollment into cardiac rehabilitation patients will undergo a six minute walk test and graded exercise stress test on a treadmill to determine exercise capacity. Additionally, a quality of life questionnaire will be given. Following the stress test, patients will be randomized (2 to 1 ratio) into either cardiac rehabilitation or control. Those chosen to be in the control group will be encouraged to maintain daily activities; those in the rehabilitation group will partake in 6 weeks of a standard cardiac rehabilitation program. This will consist of 3 days a week of supervised exercise as well as education regarding diet and lifestyle modifications. At 6 weeks after randomization both groups will again undergo fitness assessments and retake the quality of life questionnaires.

NCT00071565
The purposes of this study are to identify possible genes that may increase the risk of aneurysm development in the brain, and to determine the effect of environmental factors such as cigarette smoking and high blood pressure on the expression of these genes.
NCT01732315
This protocol describes a study about vaccination uptake among adolescents. The purpose of the study is to determine whether parents who receive email reminders will be more likely to obtain Tdap (tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis), HPV (human papilloma virus), meningococcal, and influenza vaccines for their adolescent children than parents who do not receive email reminders.
NCT01506401
What is the effect of early high frequency oscillation (HFO) versus a lung-protective conventional ventilation (CV) strategy (using HFO only as rescue therapy), on all-cause hospital mortality among patients with severe early acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)?
NCT01281904
There are over 2 million breast cancer survivors today. Persistent Cancer-Related fatigue (PCRF), a state of being tired or weary, is one of the most common and distressing symptoms experienced by breast cancer (BC) survivors. Rates of significant PCRF in BC survivors range from 30% to 82% within the first 5-years of diagnosis and there are few treatment options for PCRF and these treatments require the availability of a trained practitioner, are associated with significant costs, pose a sizeable burden for the patient, or have unacceptable side-effects. Acupressure is a technique derived from acupuncture, a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In acupressure, physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points by the hand, elbow, or with various devices to treat disease. Pilot studies have demonstrated that self-administered acupressure can significantly decrease PCRF by as much as 70% in cancer survivors. Acupressure can also have positive effects on sleep quality in cancer patients and other chronically ill populations. Self-administered acupressure is a non-toxic and inexpensive treatment that requires minimal instruction. It also requires little effort and time on the part of the patient to successfully complete. Thus, acupressure appears to be a promising treatment for PCRF and associated symptoms. The investigators are conducting a single-blind, placebo controlled study to examine the specific effect of two opposing acupressure treatments compared to standard of care. The goal of this study is to determine the benefit of acupressure on treating persistent fatigue experience by many patients after completing their cancer treatment. Study patients will be randomized into one of three groups: two different types of acupressure or a standard of care arm. For those participants randomized to receive acupressure, the technique will be taught to them by a study nurse trained by an acupressure specialist. Participants will be asked to perform the acupressure daily over the next six weeks, during which time they will record their fatigue and be asked to wear an activity monitor to have their daily activity levels monitored.
NCT00613678
Purpose: To study the effects of two different rehabilitation programs for people with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee. Hypothesis 1: Participants who received Activity Stratgey Training will report less pain and physical disability at 8-weeks and 6-months follow-up. Hypothesis 2: Participants who receive Activity Strategy Training will have a greater increase in physical activity as measured by a wrist-worn accelerometer. Hypothesis 3: Participants who receive Activity Stratgey Training will report greater improvements in health-related quality of life.

NCT02075450
Our project aims to improve the delivery and assessment of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) during pediatric cardiac arrest by introducing 2 novel approaches: 1. We will evaluate the effectiveness of a novel, credit card sized, and highly affordable "nano-card" CPR visual feedback device to improve compliance with HSFC CPR guidelines when used during simulated pediatric cardiac arrest; 2. We will also develop and study a novel, "Just-in-Time" (JIT) CPR training video, integrating proven educational methods (video-based lecture, expert modeling, practice-while-watching), and use the CPR visual feedback device to provide real-time coaching. We hypothesize that: H1: The use of a CPR visual feedback device will improve compliance with current HSFC CPR and resuscitation guidelines during a simulated pediatric in-hospital cardiac arrest scenario compared with standard CPR with no visual feedback. H2: A JIT CPR Training Video, viewed by healthcare providers 2-4 weeks prior to the resuscitation event, will improve compliance with current HSFC CPR and resuscitation guidelines during simulated pediatric cardiac arrest compared with those healthcare providers with no prior exposure to the JIT CPR Training Video. H3: That there is poor correlation between providers' perception of CPR quality and actual measured CPR quality H4: That task load varies depending on provider role and type of clinical scenario

NCT00003636
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining surgery with chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known whether chemotherapy before surgery is more effective than chemotherapy after surgery in treating ovarian, peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying chemotherapy given before surgery to see how well it works compared to chemotherapy given after surgery with or without additional surgery in treating patients with stage III or stage IV ovarian cancer, peritoneal cancer, or fallopian tube cancer.
