Retrospective Review Study for Prognostic Transcriptional Output Related to Androgen Receptor Expression in Patients Treated for High Risk Prostate Cancer with Proton Therapy

RATIONALE: Bortezomib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Androgens can cause the growth of prostate cancer cells. Drugs, such as goserelin, leuprolide, flutamide, or bicalutamide, may stop the adrenal glands from making androgens. Giving bortezomib with hormone therapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving bortezomib with or without hormone therapy works in treating patients with relapsed prostate cancer.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining hormone therapy with chemotherapy and androgen suppression may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known which treatment regimen is more effective for prostate cancer. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of chemotherapy plus hormone therapy versus androgen suppression alone as initial therapy in patients with prostate cancer that is metastatic or that cannot be removed surgically.
