A published phase 2 study reported that lonafarnib was administered as a single agent via continuous or intermittent oral dosing to 76 women with advanced breast cancer who were previously treated with chemotherapy and/or with endocrine therapy. Objective response rates of approximately 10% were observed. This study will determine the rate of progression-free survival of patients with metastatic breast cancer who receive lonafarnib.

RATIONALE: Erlotinib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for tumor cell growth. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining erlotinib with docetaxel may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining erlotinib with docetaxel in treating patients who have stage IV or recurrent breast cancer.

RATIONALE: Understanding how well patients comply with their treatment regimen may help doctors plan the best treatment and ongoing care. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying whether patients comply with their hormone therapy regimen in women with estrogen receptor-positive stage I, stage II, or stage IIIA breast cancer.
